Question and Answers

"A MASSAGE! Who has time for a massage?"  There are kids to pick-up from school and drive to karate class, dinner to cook, a house to clean and, oh yeah, the boss wants the Kellerman proposal revamped and on his desk by 9 am tomorrow.  Who has time? Whether it's a 15 minute chair massage in the office or a one hour full-body massage at a local center or in the privacy of your own home, You do!  The benefits you receive from taking the time out to care for yourself override any excuses you can come up with.

"Only the rich and well-to-do get massages."  Research shows that regular every day people are getting more massages and report that they feel more relaxed, experience relief from aches and pains and a general overall feeling of calm.  In today's world of ever growing stress and pressure women are starting to surpass the men in stress related illness.  Massage Therapy is one important aspect of maintaining a healthier lifestyle, both mentally and physically, by promoting circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxation of muscles, relief from pain, and restoration of metabolic balance.

"Where can I get a massage?"  Your massage session can take place in the privacy of your home or at the therapist's.  If you choose to go to the therapist's home you will be greeted by a warm, comfortable, quiet room filled with soft music and candle light.  If you prefer to have the therapist come to you, the therapist will arrive with a massage table and music and setup in the room of your choice.

"What type of education does a massage therapist need?"  While requirements vary from state to state, New York state requires the therapist complete a certain number of course hours and sit for a state licensing board exam. The therapist's course of study includes anatomy, physiology, pathology and various massage techniques.

"What happens during a massage?"  First you will fill out a medical history and discuss what the desired outcome of your session is with the therapist.  Then he/she will leave the room allowing you to undress in privacy. You may decided on the amount of clothing you wish to remove. You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable and only the area being worked on will be exposed. A typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck and shoulders.  The relationship between therapist and patient is one of confidentiality and trust.  You work together to relieve the tension, aches and pains while balancing the body's systems to maintain a healthy and happy life.

"Are there any restrictions?"  There are certain physical conditions that may require a physicians approval before treatment can be given.  These conditions may include high blood pressure, heart conditions, recovery from a recent trauma and pregnancy.  While a therapist is trained to work with many physical aliments she/he is not a doctor.  If there is any question in your mind you should always check with your physician first.

"Will I be sore afterwards?" Depending on the type of massage you receive and the how tight or sore your muscles are before you receive the massage.  There may be some initial discomfort if you are already sore before you start however it should only be momentary.  If you are feeling pain during the massage then you should tell the therapist.  You and the therapist need to communicate to bring about the best results.

"How long will the effects of the massage last?"  Immediately after your massage you will feel relaxed, revitalized and invigorated.  Depending on the type of massage and the physical state in which you started out in the effects can last for several days.  However if you have a chronic problem it may take several weeks before results become apparent.

"How often should I get a massage?"  That's up to you and your personal situation.  A massage once a week will help you deal with the stress and better face the daily complications of life.  Massage on a regular basis bolsters the body's immune system and helps enhance your health.  If you have a chronic condition or medical aliment your therapist will recommend a specific treatment schedule.
